هذا كتاب ماتع، تدور مادته الأدبية على ثلاثة محاور: المثل، والشعر، والقصة. فهو يتناول الأمثال السائرة التي متنها بيت شعري أو شطر بيت، فيتتبّع في بطون المصادر الأدبية القصة أو المناسبة التي قيل فيها ذلك البيت الذي ذهب مثلاً، مصدّراً كلامه بالبيت، فقصّته، ثم يختم في الوجه الذي يضرب له هذا المثل. وقد توخّى المؤلف في كتابه توثيق ما ينقله من مصادره الأصلية، مقتصراً على الأمثال القديمة التي قيلت في أزمنة كانت فيها العربية في غاية ازدهارها وصحّتها.
وقسّم الكتاب إلى قسمين، القسم الأول منهما لما استفاض من تلك الأمثال الشعرية واشتهر على الألسنة، والقسم الثاني لما كان دون ذلك في الشهرة. وأخيراً، فهو كتاب أدبيّ لطيف، يجمع بين طيّاته في آن واحد أشتات من الأدب واللغة والشعر والتاريخ وطرائف الأخبار.
