يهتم علم الدلالة، بدراسة اللغة بوصفها الرمز الحامل للمعنى، وبدراسة قدرتها على إيصال المعنى والدلالة عليه.
وقد أشار القدماء إلى أهمية اللغة بصفتها وسيلة إتصال، أو إيصال للمعنى وإختلافها عن سائر أنواع الدلالة، وكفايتها عند عدم كفاية غيرها، وموضوعنا يتصل بدلالة اللغة، وهو يبحث في ظاهرة من أهم ظواهر العربية، وهي (الإعراب).
ولم تحظَ قرينة من القرائن الدالة على المعنى بمثل ما حظيَ به من الإهتمام والدراسة، فلا يتجاوز كتاب في النحو تناول الإعراب، والحديث عن وظيفته في الدلالة على المعنى، ولقد ظلّت هذه الأحاديث محتاجة إلى بحث يجمعها، ويرصد إتجاهاتها في تفسير هذه الدلالة وينبه إلى ما ظلَّ منها خافتاً لسطوع غيره.
ولأن الحديث عن هذه الظاهرة وتفسيرها استمر إلى عصرنا الحديث كان عليَّ أن أحدد للبحث زمناً، فكان زمنه مقتصراً على البحث القديم، ومنقطعاً عن عصرنا الحديث، ذلك لأن البحث القديم ساده إنسجام في التفكير والتفسير، وإن اختلفت إتجاهات التفسير، فهي الإتجاهات المحددة نفسها التي ترددها كتب النحو.
أما البحث في العصر الحديث، فقد تميز من القديم بأنه انفتح على نتائج البحث اللغوي العالمي، وأخذ بها، فكانت أفكار ومناهج في البحث جديدة وواسعة، لذا رأيت أن أقطع البحث عن العصر الحديث، لأنه مرحلة أخرى مختلفة، تحتاج إلى دراسة أخرى، ولقد استفاد البحث هذا التحديد الزمني من طريق كلمة (القدماء) التي وصفنا بها (النحاة)، وهي تعني غير المعاصرين.
