و« الرسالة » كتاب القوم، فأكثر من النقل عنه، ووشى المنقول بحكايات طريفة لطيفة، غالبها مما تفرد بروايته، ففيها الكثير من مرويات عصره ومصره، وهذه ميزة تأريخية نزع إليها المصنف. وحبّك ذلك كله بروايات الحديث التي أسندها وانتقاها مما يؤيد الباب الذي يبحث فيه. ابتدأ الكتاب بباب الأذكار التي هي مفتاح السالكين وحلية الأولياء والأبرار.
أشاد بهذا السفر بأرباب القلوب الطاهرة السليمة، التي آذن الله بالحرب لمن عادى أصحابها، وخصَّ أهل الله وخاصته من خلقه، من أدرجت كلماته في جنباتهم، فهم يتلونها على النحو الذي يرضاه سبحانه.
والمؤلف اليافعي فضلاً عن كونه راوية محدثاً، ومؤرخاً مدققاً، وفقيهاً موفقاً.. كان أديباً رائق الأدب، أكثر من محاسنه، ونثر ونظم، وله في هذا الكتاب ما يزيد عن ألف بيت شعر، ثلثاها من نظمه، فصار الكتاب مرجعاً هاماً لتخريج شعره وضبطه.
وبالجملة: فالكتاب دوحة تربوية أخلاقية، يستجم فيها صاحب العناء والكد، ويستروح نسائمها طالب الأدب والرفعة.
