إن هذا البحث هو النشرة الأولى الكاملة لمشروع يعود أصله إلى ما يقارب خمس عشرة سنة، في ذلك الوقت كنت قد إجتزت إمتحاناتي في الفيزياء النظرية وشارفت على إنهاء رسالتي.
لحسن الحظ طلب إليَّ المساعدة في تعليمٍ جامعي تجريبي للفيزياء لغير العلميين، كان هذا أول إحتكاك لي مع تاريخ العلوم، ولمفاجأتي الكبرى نسف هذا الإحتكاك في العمق - مع نظريات وممارسات علمية تمَّ تجاوزها - بعض تصوراتي الأساسية حول طبيعة العلم وأسباب نجاحه الخاص.
هذه التصوّرات كنت قد إستخلصت بعضها من تكويني العلمي بالذات، وبعضها الآخر من إهتمام قديم وعفويّ كنت أحمله لفلسفة العلوم.
بيد أن هذه التصورات، مهما كانت فائدتها التربوية ومهما كانت معقوليتها المجردة، لم تتلاءم على الإطلاق مع مسار العمل الذي كشفته الدراسة التاريخية، ومع ذلك كانت هذه المفاهيم ولا تزال المنطلق لمناقشات عديدة حول العلم.
