إن العلوم العربية حظيت بإهتمام كبير من العلماء والمفكرين، فدرسوها واهتموا بأساليبها، وما تحويه من طرائق أداء المعاني والدلالات، ووضعوا ضوابط كثيرة استقروها من لغة العرب وكلامهم، فأصبحت في ما بعد حكماً يلتجأ إليه لبيان صحة الكلام أو سقمه.
ولقد كان علم الوقف والإبتداء أحد العلوم العربية التي نشأت بسبب الحاجة إليها، لبيان المعاني والدلالات، ولقد كان موضوع الوقف والإبتداء مدار بحث علماء اللغة، والتفسير، والقراءات، لأنه العلم الذي يحدد معنى الجملة ويؤشر درجة كماله في سلم أعلاه التمام وأسفله القبح، ومن هنا كانت فائدة البحث في مجال من مجالات هذا العلم.
ومن هذا المنطلق، جاء اختيار المؤلف لهذا الموضوع، وهو موضوع متشعب يدخل فيه كثير من العلوم الدينية واللغوية ويدخل هو في بعض من جوانبها، وقد تم تناول البحث وفق خطة قُسمت على أربعة فصول: الفصل الأول: وخصص لدراسة جوانب مهمة في علم الوقف والإبتداء، أما الفصل الثاني: خصص لدراسة مصادر علم الوقف والإبتداء، والفصل الثالث: بين الدراسة النحوية في كتب الوقف والإبتداء، الفصل الرابع: خصص للدراسة اللغوية في كتب الوقف والإبتداء.
