سياسيّ سوريّ (6 تشرين ثاني 1879 - اغتيل في 6 تموز 1940) درس الطب في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت ليتخرّج منها عام 1906.
إتّصل ببعض معارضي الحكم العثمانيّ مثل عبد الحميد الزهراوي في بداية شبابه محاربًا تصرّفات جمال باشا السفّاح، حيث تولّى في مصر رئاسة تحرير جريدة الكوكب ليتركها بعد أن تبيّنت له تبعيّتها للسياسة الإنكليزيّة، ومن ثمّ ساند ثورة الشريف حسين ضد العثمانيّين.
في الحكومة السورية التي ترأسها هاشم الأتاسي في أيار 1920، تسلّم الشهبندر وزارة الخارجيّة السورية التي سقطت بدخول الفرنسيّين وفرضهم الانتداب على سوريّا، تزوج عام 1910 من سارة المؤيّد العظم.
إنضمّ عام 1925 للثورة السوريّة في جبل العرب، ليضطرّ بعدها للهرب خارج سوريا حيث لجأ إلى الأردن بعد أن صدر بحقه غيابيًّا حكم بالإعدام.
ألغي الحكم لاحقًا ليعود إلى دمشق في أيّار عام 1937 ويبدأ بمعارضة المعاهدة السورية الفرنسية 1936.
في عام 1940 قامت مجموعة باغتياله في عيادته وألصقت التهمة بزعماء الكتلة الوطنيّة: سعد الله الجابريّ وجميل مردم بك ولطفي الحفار.
لاحقًا تمّ القبض على الفاعلين واعترفوا بفعلتهم، وأن الدافع إليها كان دافعًا دينيًّا، وزعموا أن الشهبندر تعرّض للإسلام في إحدى خطبه، وأنّهم فعلوا فعلتهم انتقاماً وثأرًا للدين الحنيف.
فحكمت المحكمة عليهم بالإعدام، ونفّذ فيهم الحكم شنقًا يوم الثالث من شهر شباط سنة 1941.
