قد تكون شخصية باين غير معروفة بالنسبة للكثيرين من مثقفي الجيل الحالي ولكن فون باين كان عالماً بارزاً من أعلام السياسة الأوروبية في حقبة الثلاثينات وحتى انتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية، وكانت سيرته التي دونها في كتابه هذا قد صدرت منذ عام 1952 وترجمت إلى معظم اللغات الحية، ولكنها لم تترجم للعربية وقد أقدم "فاروق الحريري" على ترجمتها ليقدمها للقارئ باللغة العربية، وفون باين يدعى في الأوساط السياسية (الثعلب العجوز) لدهائه وحصافته.
