يجمع هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه الأحاديث المتواترة عن الأئمة في شأن قضية استشهاد الإمام الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنه في واقعة الطف المشهورة وما جرى بعد ذلك من احداث.
عن عمله هذا يقول الشيخ محمود قانصو العاملي الشهابي: "... ولقد عندت في هذه الصفحات إلى شرح ما جرى بعد استشهاد الحسين (رضي الله عنه) من الأحداث التي تعد من آثار استشهاد الحسين(رضي الله عنه) وتوابعه، ولقد عمدت إلى سرد الأحداث والأخبار دون التعرض لمصادرها مشهورة معروفة لدى المتتبعين، وإنما كان عملي هو جمعها وتصنيفها مبوبة على أبواب..."
كل ذلك ياتي بهدف انتقال القارئ من عظيم آثار الحدث ونتائجه إلى إدراك جوانب من عظمة وأهمية ذاك الحدث وتلمس معنى الشهادة والتضحية في سبيل الله.
انقسم الكتاب إلى ستة فصول هي: الفصل الأول: ما جرى على أجساد الشهداء، وجاء بعنوان (أحوال الأجساد)، الفصل الثاني: ما جرى على النساء والذريَة، وجاء بعنوان (أحوال السبايا)، الفصل الثالث: ما جرى من أحزان ومآسي على الكون وجاء بعنوان (حزن الكائنات)، الفصل الرابع: انتقاض ممالك الإسلام وخلافاتها، وجاء بعنوان (انتقاض الممالك)، الفصل الخامس: إنتقاض الشيعة وتحركاتهم، وجاء بعنوان(إنتقاضة الشيعة)، وأخيراً الفصل السادس: ثورة المختار الثقفي وقتله لأعداء الله وجاء بعنوان (ثورة المختار...).
