التّعادل ظاهرة في العربية، جاء مصطلحها في التراث اللغوي العربي صريحاً وجاء معبراً عنه بمصطلحات أخرى هي بمعنى التّعادل كالإبدال والنيابة والإستغناء والتقارض والتعويض.
لذا، جاءت هذه الدراسة للدكتورة إبتسام ثابت محمد محاولة لإقامة الحدود الفاصلة بين مستويات هذه الظواهر اللغوية والنحوية، وتجديد مفاهيمها الإصطلاحية.
فكان (التّعادل) هو محور الدراسة، بوصفه ظاهرة كثرت مواضعها في اللغة العربية، على مستوى أصوات المفردة، وصيغها، ومواضعها في التركيب والسياق وكثر إطلاق لفظها، وما رادفه، في مواضع أخرى مشابهة للتّعادل.
من هنا، تقول المؤلفة "حاولت في هذه الأطروحة أن أوزان بين ظاهرة التّعادل من جهة - بعد تحديد مفهوم إصطلاحي لكل ظاهر من الظواهر، تحديد ملامح خاصة به، وتخليصها من شوائب الخلط والتعدد، ثم سعيت إلى تتبع مواضع التّعادل، ثم تعبير اللغويين بألفاظ خاصة عن التّعادل، كما استقصيت بعد الإستقراء الدقيق تصريحات اللغويين والنحويين عن هذه الظاهرة، وتلميحاتهم عنها...".
تتالف الدراسة من مقدمة وثلاثة فصول، جاءت تحت العناوين الرئيسية الآتية: الفصل الأول: التّعادل الصوتي في المفردة، الفصل الثاني: الأبنية الصرفية ومعانيها، الفصل الثالث: التّعادل في الدرس النحوي.
