قصدت من ترجمة هذا الكتاب "التقنية في العالم القديم" وعنوانه الأصلي "Technology in the Ancient World" للآثار الإنجليزي هنري هودجز، سد ثغرة رئيسة في حقل الدراسات الآثارية-التاريخية في المكتبة العربية، سيما وأن عمل هودجز هذا، يتسم بميزات هامة، تجعل وضعه في متناول طلبة الآثار والتاريخ بخاصة، والدراسات الإنسانية بعامة، في بلادنا، ذا فائدة جمة، فالعمل الذي بين أيدينا، يتتبع، بدقة علمية، الإنجازات التقنية للإنسان منذ المحاولات الأولى، في فترة ما قبل التاريخ، لصناعة الأدوات الحجرية البسيطة، إلى قيام صناعة الآلات المتطورة في العصر الروماني، وهو خلال ذلك يرصد تلك الإنجازات، وساء أفي حقول استخداماتها المختلفة مثل الزراعة والبناء والنقل، البري والبحري... الخ، أم في أدواتها وموادها مثل الفخار والمعادن والزجاج... الخ، وهو إلى ذلك يحرص على تقصي تلك الإنجازات التقنية في الحضارات القائمة في المرحلة المدرسة-في بلاد الرافدين وسورية ومصر واليونان وإيطاليا والصين والهند وأمريكا الجنوبية-مبيناً علائق التأثير المتبادل بين الحضارات في عملية تطور الصناعة، وكاشفاً بالتالي عن وحدى الحضارة الإنسانية. ولعل مما يزيد قيمة هذا العمل احتواؤه على عدد كبير من الصور والرسومات والترميمات المقترحة التي تساعد على توضيح الأفكار للقارئ المتخصص والهاوي على السواء.
