"هنريك إبسن" كاتب نرويجي المولد رغم أن بعض أجداده كانوا دنماركيين أو اسكتلنديين، لكنه كان نرويجياً بالأحرى نظراً لطبيعته ومزاجه من جهة، وتربيته من جهة أخرى. وتدور جميع مسرحياته -باستثناء إمبراطور وجاليلي- في النرويج تارة في مدينة كريستيانا -مثل مسرحية البطة المتوحشة- وتارة (بل وغالباً) في المدن الساحلية الصغيرة أو الصخور الجليدية أو على الجوانب الوعرة للمضايق البحرية أو في بعض القرى بالوديان الداخلية، كما هو الحال في مسرحيات براند وبيرجينيت والمشهد الدرامي.
لكن ابسن كان في الوقت نفسه مواطناً أوروبياً ومواطناً عالمياً. وقد أمضى خمسة وعشرين عاماً خارج بلاده في منفاه الأدبي في النمسا وإيطاليا, ألمانيا بصفة خاصة. كان إبسن يعالج موضوعات نرويجية، لكنه كان في الوقت نفسه شديد التأثر بالتيارات الفكرية التي اجتاحت أوروبا في ذلك الوقت. وقد تفوق إبسن على جميع مواطنيه في الإفلات من براثن الإقليمية ذلك الخطر الذي يتهدد كل كاتب أو فنان أسكندرينافي.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتيح المؤلف موريس غرافييه "المسرحيات إبسن أن تقوم بالدور الرئيسي من النطق بفكره، ووسط تقديم عميق لحياة ابسن الشخصية والفكرية ويهتم هو بتحليل شخصية ابسن وتوجهه الفكري المسرحي، كما ويعني بإلقاء الضوء على الشخصيات التي اتخذها ابسن أبطالاً لمسرحياته.. وفي النهاية أثبت المؤلف قائمة مسلسلة تضمنت لائحة بالمؤلفات المسرحية لهزيك ابسن وأخرى جاءت بمثابة قائمة موجزة بالمراجع والترجمات الخاصة بابسن والتي استفاد منها في كتابة دراسته هذه.
