يجمع المسلمون أن القرآن الكريم نزلت آياته وسوره نجوماً متفرقة على مدى ثلاث وعشرين سنة ومنه ما نزل ابتداءً لبيان حكم تشريعي أو توضيح سنن أو سرد أحداث الأمم الماضية أو لغرض الوعظ والإرشاد وما يتعلق بأمر المعاد والجنة والنار وأحوال القيامة والبعث والنشور، وهناك قسم آخر نزل لسبب كان وراءه وداعي ومثير لنزوله لحادثة أبهم أمرها أو مسألة لم يعرف حلها فتنزل الآية معالجة لها وتضع حلاً لمشكلتها وهذا ما يعبر عنه في كتب التفسير بأسباب النزول.
والغرض في هذه الأوراق الحديث عن أسباب النزول ومدى أهميتها في تفسير الآيات وموقف المفسرين والعلماء من الأخذ بها وردها. وهكذا فقد أتى هذا البحث موزعاً على شكل نقاط وهذه النقاط هي كالتالي: 1-تعريف أسباب النزول. 2-أهمية معرفة أسباب النزول. 3-تعدد الأسباب والنازل واحد وتعدد النازل والسبب واحد. 4-العبرة بعموم اللفظ لا بخصوص السبب. 5-أسباب النزول بين الرد والقبول. 6-روايات أسباب النزول في الميزان. 7-أهل البيت والقرآن.
