عرف الذكاء بأنه القدرة على حلّ المشاكل والمسائل الجديدة بالنسبة للشخص كي يتمكن من التمييز بين الذكاء والذاكرة التي تعتمد بنوع خاص على المهارات المكتسبة، فالذكاء من الناحية الاجتماعية هو القدرة على التكيف.
والى جانب ذلك يقول العلماء أن الذكاء ليس تكدّساً للمعلومات المكتسبة، بل هو نوع من الطاقة أو الكهرباء، والدراسات الحديثة لا تربط الذكاء بالعوامل الوراثية، بل إنها تعطي أهمية كبرى لتأثير البيئة. فالذكاء إذاً إمكانية أو استعداد فطري ينمو ويتبلور بفعل العوامل الاجتماعية والتربوية المكتسبة.
ومن ناحية أخرى يستعمل العلماء: "التقويم" والقياس لكل أنواع الاختبارات، إلا أن معنى القياس يمتد إلى قياس الذكاء واختبارات الذكاء التي تعرف باسم (روائز). وقد وضع العلماء تباعاً روائز عديدة ابتداءً "برائز الفريد" بينه عام 1905م وحتى هذا العصر، فكان سلم الذكاء لستانفورد-بينه. وروائز عديدة ومتنوعة تؤدي إلى حساب حاصل الذكاء I-Q وما شابه. كل هذه الأمور سيفصلها المؤلف في هذا البحث وبشكل دقيق، وقد أثبت المؤلف في كتابه هذا بحثاً أكاديمياً أولاً: ومن ثم عده روائز مقننة معروفة عالمياً، وبعدها بعض النماذج التي تساعد على تنمية الذكاء.
