"ذلك ليس نفس الشيء، لا يمكن أن يكون هذا ذات الشيء"، يتدخل لورنس في النقاش المعرفيّ لأولئك الذين يتساءلون إذا ما كان "جان"، هو نفسه الذي كتبَ أحد الإناجيل و"نهاية العالم" Apocalypse.
يتدخل لورنس بحجج حماسية، يزداد تواترها، لإنطوائها على منهج تقيّيم، و"تيبولوجيّا"، typologie (علم تصنيف الأفراد. م.م): أنه ليس نفس النمط من الرجال الذي كان بمقدوره كتابة الإنجيل و"نهاية العالم"؛ ولا أهمية لمسألة أن يكون كلا النصين مُعقد، أو مركب، ويتضمن على أشياء مختلفة، فالسؤال لا يتعلق بفردين، مؤلفين، ولكن بنمطين من الرجال، أو جانبين من جوانب الروح، مجموعتين مختلفتين تماماً عن بعضهما الإنجيل نص إرستقراطيّ، فرديّ individuel، عذب، عشقيّ، منحط décadent، ومع ذلك مهذب.
أمّا "نهاية العالم"، فهو نص جماعي، شعبويّ، فظ inculte ضغائنيّ ووحشي، سيكون علينا شرح كل مفردة من هذه المفردات، لتجنب السقوط في المعنى المعاكس لها، لكن، من البدء، لا يمكن للإنجيليّ والمُناديّ بنهاية العالم l'apocalypste أن يكونا نفس الشخص الواحد.
فجان بطموس لا يكلف نفسه وضع قناع الإنجيليّ، أو قناع المسيح فوق وجهه، ذلك لأنه يُبدع واحداً آخرأً، يفبرك غيره ويترك لنا الخيار في التعامل معه بإعتباره ما يُسقط القناع عن المسيح démasque le Christ أو يتراكب من فوقه.
يشتغل جان بطموس ضمن حقل الرعب والموت الكونيّ la mort cosmiques، فيما يشتغل الإنجيل والمسيح في حقل الحب الإنسانيّ، والروحيّ، يُبدع المسيح ديناً للمحبة (ممارسة، طريقة في العيش، وليس إيماناً une croyance)، فيما يقدم لنا نص "نهاية العالم" دين سلطة religion du pouvoir - إيمان، وطريقة مرعبة في الحكم - وبدلاً من عطية المسيح don du christ مديونية لا نهاية لها dette infinie.
