نقرأ في هذا الكتاب نوع من أدب الخاصة السائد في القرن الثالث والرابع الهجري والذي يعكس إصرار الخاصة على التمايز عن العامة، حيث المجتمع ينقسم إلى فئتين رئيسيتين هما الخاصة والعامة، وحيث كان للغويين والأباء دوراً في إبراز هذا التمايز، ومنهم مؤلف هذا الكتاب (الوشاء) حيث يسجل في هذا الباب صورة عن الحياة الراقية التي كان يحياها جماعة من الميسورين والظرفاء، ويقترح قواعد في أصول التعامل وفي أدب المائدة واللباس والزينة واستخدام الجواهر، ويسجل أيضاً نوع من أدب المكاتبة بين الظرفاء والعشاق، ليأتي الكتاب أشبه بوثيقة تاريخية، لن نجد ما يشابهها إلا بعد قرن مع (حكاية أبي القاسم البغدادي) التي لم تكتف بوصف مظاهر الترف داخل البيت البغدادي، بل انتقلت إلى شوارع بغداد في الجزء الشرقي منها، حيث قام قصر الخلافة وقصور السلاطين والوزراء، وما تبعها من أسواق تجارية مزهردة.
وعود على بدء، فالظرف عند الوشاء له حدود ثلاثة وهي الأدب ومكارم الأخلاق، والمروءة، والحب العفيف. وهو أيضاً "البراعة وذكاء القلب، يوصف به الفتيان الأزوال والفتيات الزولات، ولا يوصف به الشيخ وللا السيدة" فالزوال الرجل الخفيف الظريف يعجب من ظرفه، والزولة المرأة البرزة، أو الفطنة الداهية أو الظريفة، وهؤلاء وضعهم "الوشاء" تحت مصطلح أشباه الخاصة، الذين يملكون نوعاً من المرونة والقدرة في التعامل مع الخاصة.
يبقى أن نشير أن كتاب (الظرف والظرفاء) هو مخطوط جامعة ليدن الوحيد قدمه أول مرة للقراء البروفسور برنو سنة 1887، وأعيد طبعه لاحقاً في القاهرة وبيروت، ولأهميته التاريخية دأب الدكتور فهمي سعد إلى تحقيقه وتخريج أحاديثه وأشعاره وأقواله الماثورة وكذلك مروياته وأمثاله وشرح مفرداته والوقوف عند المصطلحات ذات الدلالة الحضارية في متنه، وإعادة توزيع النص إلى فقرات وفق ما يتطلبه البحث العلمي.
