لقد اهتمت دول العالم المختلفة في الفترة الأخيرة، وبشكل خاص الدول المتقدمة صناعياً وعلمياً بمجال الهندسة الوراثية لما له من أهمية في تطوير وتنمية مجتمعاتها في جميع الجوانب، الصحية والصناعية، الزراعية، الاقتصادية، والاجتماعية، إضافة إلى خطورة الدور الذي يؤديه هذا النوع من العلوم وتطبيقاته في مجال الأمن القومي. من هذا المنطلق كان الهدف في وضع الكتاب والذي اعتمد بالدرجة الأولى على ترجمة إحدى نشريات منظمة اليونيسكو، إضافة إلى الرجوع لبعض المصادر المعتمدة والمنشورة.
يقع هذا الكتاب في ثمانية فصول يتعلق أولها بتاريخ هذا الحقل من المعرفة، ويتناول الفصل الثاني موضوع هندسة الجينات وتطبيقاتها بينما يهتم الفصل الثالث بالتقنية الحيوية وزيادة الإنتاج النباتي، أما الفصل الرابع فقد تناول ما يدور حول إنتاج المواد المفيدة بواسطة الأحياء المجهرية كما تناول الفصل الخامس التحويل المايكروبي للفضلات والمنتجات العرضية الزراعية والصناعية، إضافة إلى ما تطرق إليه الفصل السادس حول موضوع الطاقة الحيوية، أما الفصل السابع فهو يهتم بنمو وتطور الصناعة الحيوية، وأخيراً الفصل الثامن الذي تضمن التحليل حول آفاق المستقبل والمشاكل المتوقعة.
