الحافظ أبو عبد الله الذهبي التركماني الأصل الفارقي ثم الدمشقي (673-748) شيخ المحدثين، وقدوة الحفاظ والقراء، محدث الشام ومؤرخه، أفاض في مصنفاته عن علمه، وبرع في علم الحديث عامة، وفي علم الرجال خاصة، فكان له مصنفات هامة فيهما، كما في تواريخ البلدان، فكان له عدة كتب في التاريخ وتاريخ الرجال. وصنف كتابه هذا "العبر في خبر من غبر" في التاريخ الذي في تاريخ مختصر على السنوات، يذكر فيه ما قدر له من أشهر الحوادث والوفيات، مما ينبغي حفظه، وقد رتبه بدءاً من هجرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى المدينة وابتدأه بهذه الحادثة متابعاً التاريخ للأحداث الهامة عاماً فعاماً، منتهياً بعام سنة تسع وتسعين وست مائة بحادثة غزو التتار الذي حصد في ذاك العام، بالإضافة إلى التاريخ للأحداث فإن الحافظ الذهبي كان يعمد إلى التاريخ للرجال الذين صادفت وفاتهم في عام الحدث الهام نفسه، راوياً عن هؤلاء الرجال وعن مصنفاتهم إن وجدت. ويعد مصنف الذهبي هذا من أهم مصادر تاريخ الرجال الذي يعود إليه الباحثون والدارسون في هذا المجال.
