إنّها جنة على الأرض، لجأ الإنسان إليها من دهور وعصور، فوجد فيها الأمان والإطمئنان، لاذ بها الجائع فأطعمته، والظامئ فروته، والخائف فأمنته، سكنها إنسان ما قبل التاريخ، ترك في كهوفها عدّته، عصاه وحجره ووسائل نجاته وأسباب حياته البدائية.
توالت عليها الحضارات، فتركت بصماتها على ثراها وتعاقبت الإمبراطوريات، والدول، والممالك، وترك كل من هؤلاء إرثاً حضارياً، أو معلماً إنسانياً، أو ذكرى اليمة.
