إن فحول العلماء وحذاق الأطباء وإن كانوا إشتغلوا بنقل الكتب الطبية من اللغات الأجنبية مثل اليونانية إلى العربية منذ عهد الخلافة الأموية. لكن هذه النهضة الطبية الجديدة العربية لم تبلغ مداها ولا نالت حظها إلا في عهد الخلافة العباسية حين تولى مهرة الأطباء والحكماء مثل حنين بن إسحاق وإسحاق بن حنين حبيش ويحي بن ماسويه وعيسى بن يحيى وغيرهم نقل هذا الفن العظيم من اللغة اليونانية والهندية وغيرها إلى اللغة العربية وهم لم يقتصروا على النقل الجيد من لغة إلى لغة، بل إجتهدوا وأضافوا إليه وصنفوا رسائل بديعة معنية على مشاهداتهم وألفوا ما يقال عنه كنّاشات هوت الفنون الطبية المتنوعة وجمعت شتاتها، فذللوا لطلبة الطب ما كان صعباً وأصبح سهلاً عليهم تناوله بعد أن كان عسيراً. وإن من تلك الكنّاشات الطبية القديمة التي نقلت إلى اللغة العربية أو تمّ تأليفها بالعربية في بدء الخلافة العباسية أو قبلها لم يذكر مصنفوا العرب إلا هذه السبع: ثلث مجموعات لأوريباسيوس، وثلث كناشات لاهرون القس وفولس الأجانيطي وجورجس أبي بختيشوع وفردوس الحكمة لعلي الطبري، الذي هو أول المجموعات الطبية التي أُلِّفت باللغة العربية. ولم يصل من هذه الكناشات السبع غير فردوس الحكمة والذي هو بين يدي القارئ. وكان الكتاب يمثل مكانته في مجاله الطبي حتى أن أشهر المؤرخين محمد بن جرير الطبري كان يطالعه وهو مريض ملازم الفراش. كما أن الصاحب إسماعيل بن عباد لام الناس على تفضيلهم كتاب له قد ألفه، عن كتاب فردوس الحكمة، ناهيك عن فضله أن أبا بكر الأزي والمسعودي والبيروني وغيرهم من المحققين قد إستشهدوا به في مواضع شتى من كتبهم. ونظراً لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد تم الإعتناء به، وتم إغناؤه بمقدمة جاءت ضمن أربعة أبواب وهي: 1-سيرة علي بن مصنف فردوس الحكمة. 2-كتاب فردوس الحكمة وما مداه من محاسن والمساوئ. 3-نسج فردوس الحكمة. 4-المتن المطبوع الحاضر لفردوس الحكمة.
