... وما أن وصلوا إلى اليابسة حتى نزلوا من القارب ليتركوا النورس يفعل ما يشاء، حط النورس بقرب أثناه الميتة مرّة أخرى، وأخذ يصدر صوته الحزين ويقلب أثناه بمنقاره، وقف الثلاثة على مسافة بضعة أمتار من القارب، وقد غلب عليهم الصمت المطبق، تخلل ذلك الصمت تلاطم هادئ لأمواج المياه، وهدوء زاده صراخ النورس وحشة ومهابة.
إنها لحظات أسى لمن يريد التحدث عن حالهم، أخيراً حل الضجيج واخترق كل لحظاتهم تلك عندما اقترب صبيان القرية من القارب بصراخهم وعصيّهم، عندها لم يكن لطائر النورس خيار آخر غير أن يطير ويحلق بعيداً.
طار النورس محلقاً في الهواء، نظر الثلاثة إليه بعيون تلاحق حركاته، ووجوه مليئة بالحسرة والأسى، طال صمتهم وهم ينظرون إليه غير مكترثين بضجيج الصبيان الذي بدأ يتلاشى وهم يركضون نحو القرية، قطع (وسام) ذلك الصمت المطبق قائلاً: رحل طائر النورس حاملاً معه جرحه الكبير.
