تدور الدراسة في هذا الكتاب حول شاعر فذ من شعراء الدولة الموحدية، لم تمهله الحياة ليضيف المزيد من الشعر الذي يشهد له بنبله، ويستطرف من مثله. والشاعر هو الأديب الفقيه أبو العباس أحمد بن أبي الحكم بعيش بن علي بن شكيل الصوفي. وهو من أهل شريش، أحد شعرائها الفحول، مع نزاهة ومروءة سابغة الذيول، وله ديوان شعر، وفي هذا الكتاب وقفة للباحث عند نماذج مختارة للشاعر ابن شكيل يتخللها تحليل لبعض العلاقات التي تكون جزءاً من سرة هذا الشاعر. والهدف تقديم صورة متكاملة عن شاعر مبدع مثل ابن شكيل، ذلك أنها تمثل عاملاً هاماً في فهم هذا العمل الأدبي، وفهم دلالته الخاصة، التي ستساعد في الحكم عليه من الجانب الجمالي، باعتباره عالماً ملموساً من الكائنات والصور والأشياء، أبدعه الشاعر الذي يتحدث إلينا من خلاله. وعلى هذا فإن القيمة الفنية لهذه الأشعار تكمن في البحث عن الشكل الذي اختاره ابن شكيل لخلق هذا العالم والتعبير عنه. وأما النماذج المختارة التي ضمها هذا الكتاب، فقد بلغت ستاً وعشرين مقطوعة، تتوزع بين القصيدة الطويلة التي تشارف أبياتها التسعين بيتاً، وبين المقطعة الصغيرة التي لا تتجاوز الستة أبيات، وبين البيتين المفردين. وتمثل القصائد التي ضمها الكتاب والتي استخرجها الباحث من مخطوط ذكره في المقدمة خمس عشر قصيدة تنوعت مضامينها وأغراضها بينما اكتفت بعض المصادر مثل "نفح الطيب" و"المغرب" و"لمح السر" و"روايات المبرزين" بإيراد البيتين أو الثلاثة في حين تتوزع المقطعات الثلاثة الأخرى، التي تم إلحاقها بهذا المجموع بين كتب المختارات. ولعل "أزاهير الرياض" ينفرد من بين تلك المصادر في احتفاظه بقصيدة عصماء تشهد للشاعر بثقافة عالية، وشاعرية أصيلة، تؤكد قدرته على التوليد والإبداع.
