أثبتت الكشوف الأثرية التي تحققت خلال العقود الأخيرة، أمرين هامين: الأول أن هذه المنطقة التي تسمى عند العرب (بلاد الشام) تعتبر من أقدم مناطق العالم حضارة، وأن هذه الحضارة مترابطة عضويا على الامتداد الجغرافي ومتكاملة. والأمر الثاني أن هذه البلاد تحمل بعدا سياسيا دوليا واسعا لا يقاس بحجمها، إذ إن موقعها بين قارات ثلاث ما زال ذو أهمية استراتيجية وتجارية عالمية، ولقد برزت هذه الأهمية تاريخيا منذ نشاط طريق الحرير الذي يبدأ من الصين مرورا بسواحلنا على البحر الأبيض المتوسط باتجاه الغرب أو باتجاه جنوب سورية ، عبر تدمر وحلب وكانتا من المراكز الهامة في هذا الطريق وكان (الهلال الخصيب) الذي يمتد رأسه الشرقي من الخليج العربي. وينتهي رأسه الغربي في سيناء، منطقة ازدهار اقتصادي وإشعاع عبر جميع العصور، يضاف إلى ذلك أهمية إشراف سورية على صدر البحر الأبيض المتوسط الذي أفسح لها في العبور إلى جميع مرافئ البحر وإلى أنحاء أحرى من العالم، وأصبحت قادرة من خلال تبادلاتها التجارية وتحركاتها العسكرية أن تصنع تاريخها وأن تشارك في صنع تاريخ هذا الجزء من العالم.
