هذه الرواية، هي الأولى للكاتب نافتيج سارنا، تأخذ القارئ إلى أعماق شخص لم يرتق هذه الرواية، هي الأولى للكاتب نافتيج سارنا، تأخذ القارئ إلى أعماق شخص لم يرتق إلى مستوى مبادئه. مع بداية الألفية الجديدة يبلغ أفتاب شاندرا الأربعين من عمره. ينفجر العالم في وجهه. إذ تهجره زوجته إلى أعز أصدقائه. وإذ يشعر أن العالم من حوله بدأ ينهار، يبحر بعيداً في عالم الذكريات، تتراءى له حبيبته الأولى التي خانها ليتزوج زواجاً تقليدياً ويكتشف فيما بعد أنه خان نفسه ومشاعره, تصور الرواية رحلة أفتاب باتجاه الماضي ومحاولته سير أعماق وخفايا ذاته، وتأخذه إلى عالم ذاكرته التي أقلته إلى عالم أفلت منه ليهرب من ذات خانته إلى ذات أخرى خانها كي يستطيع أن يتصالح مع نفسه. هذا الهرب هو ضرب من ضروب جلد الذات بغية الحصول على نعمة التطهر من وحول تجربته الشخصية. يستخدم الكاتب تقنية الاسترجاع وتيار اللاوعي، كما يستعمل تقنية الراوي بصيغة "الأنا". يبرر سارنا ذلك بقوله: "إن هذا النمط يأخذني بعيداً إلى أعمق المواضع في عقل الشخصية الرئيسية وأكثرها مرارة وعزلة: إنه يأخذني إلى نقطة الغثيان الأخير". الرواية هي رسم واقعي لمجتمع دلهي المادي المتوحش بشخوصه الواقعية والمحلية. لكن الواضح أن محلية شخوص هذا العمل امتداد لمادية العالم الحديث التي جرفت المجتمع الهندي في طريقها. عنوان الرواية، اعتذاري بامتياز: فهو يعبر عن خجل من حاضر غير مشرف، وحنين إلى ماض لن يعود. وما بين غياب الماضي ووحشية الحاضر، لا يبدو المستقبل واعداً أو مبشراً بالأمان.
