لقد تطور علم القراءات على أيدي علماء العربية الأوائل، ثم اكتمل ونَضِجَ على أيدي جمهرة من أهل الأداء تخصصوا به، ووقفوا جهودهم البارعة الماتعة على فنونه، وتفريع أبوابه، وحصرت أنماطه في قراءات سبعية على يد الإمام ابن مجاهد البغدادي في القرن الرابع الهجري، ثم بسطت في تثمينها وتعشيرها مصنفات، كما اختصت كتب أخرى بقراءات ما بعد العشر، فتألف من هذا الجهد العلمي العظيم ثراء في فنون الأداء ومعرفة فقهه... وظهر علماء كانت لهم الريادة في تعليمه وتدريسه في حواضر العلم من العالم الإسلامي في أيامهم، ومن هؤلاء: ابن القاصح البغدادي، علي بن عثمان بن محمد المتوفى سنة إحدى وثمان مئة للهجرة المحمدية المباركة الذي امتدت شهرته إلى آفاق بعيدة، وشدت إليه الرحلة للطلب عليه لما عُرِفَ عنه من دقة وحذق وضبط لأصولِ القراءات وفروعها، وله فيها مصنفات، كان من أظهرها كتابه "مصطلح الإشارات" الذي احتوى قراءات ستة من أئمة القراءة المشهورين هم: أبو جعفر المدني، ويعقوب الحضرمي، وخلف البزار، وقراءاتهم متواترة في الصَّحيح المختار، والحسن البصري، وابن مُحَيْصِن المكي، وسليمان بن مهران الأعمش، وقراءاتهم شاذة، وقد جمع ابن الفاصح في هذا الكتاب قراءات هؤلاء الأئمة الستة جمعاً مستوعباً لم يتوفر عليه مُؤلَّف سواه، كما أنه حفظ لنا نصوصاً من مظانَّ مفقودة هي من أمهات كتب القراءات، مثل: (المفردات) و(الإقناع في القراءات الشاذة) لأبي علي الأهوازي المتوفى سنة (446هـ)، و(المفردات) لابن شداد التميمي.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب، اعتنى بدراسته وتحقيقه الدكتور "عطية الوهيبي" لتستفيد منه العربية فوائد جمة في الأصوات اللغوية وحقه الأداء والنحو والتصريف، قد جاء هذا الكتاب في بابين: الأول، اختص بالدراسة العامة لمؤلفه ابن الفاصح والتعريف بحياته ومؤلفاته، ومنها (المصطلحات الإشارات)، والثانية تحقيق نص (مصطلح الإشارات).
