صورة الشرق في الكتابات الغربية لها امتداد تاريخي بعيد، نسبياً، ولها محطات مختلفة، سلباً وإيجاباً، بعداً عن الموضوعية واقتراباً منها. ويرقى الاهتمام الإنجليزي بالشرق إلى الحقبة الأنجلوسكسونية، ولا سيما بعد اعتناق المسيحية في الغرب، وبخاصّةٍ في إنجلترا، في أواخر القرن السادس، حيث ترسّخ هذا الاهتمام بسبب توق الغربيين إلى التجارة والحجّ والثقافة والمغامرة.
ولقد أسفر هذا الاهتمام، في جملة ما أسفر عنه، عن تيار أدبي جديد نقل صورة مشوهة عن الشرق تواصلت حتى منتصف القرن الثامن عشر، قبل أن يعدّل منها رحالةٌ وباحثون مستقلون، ولا سيما لدى الجمهور البريطاني، بعد استعمار الهند.
