كانت الحملة الصليبية الثامنة على تونس في سنة 1270م، كانت هي آخر الحملات الصليبية الكبرى في العصور الوسطى، لكن الحروب الصليبية عادت مرة أخرى بمسمى جديدة، في أواخر القرن الخامس عشر وبداية السادس عشر هو حرب الاسترداد، وهي حركة طرد المسلمين من الأندلس، والتي أشعل أوارها كل من البرتغال والإسبان. وكما كانت الحملات الصليبية على الشام ومصر وتونس تتخذ الصليب ستاراً يخفي أطماعاً اقتصادية وسياسية، فليس هناك حاجة إلى تأكيد ذلك بالنسبة لحروب البرتغاليين.
فالكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ يوضح بما لا يدع مجالاً للشك أن معظم الخلافات بين دلبوكيرك ورجاله كان سببها حاليا"، وإن صراعهم فيما بينهم على السلب والنهب كان أكثر بكثير من صراعهم من أجل الصليب.
وصفحات هذا الكتاب رغم أنها بقلم برتغالي شهد الأحداث، لا تخلو من بطولات مما يوضح أن أهل المنطقة كانت لهم بعض بطولات فذّة، فأظهروا في بعض الحالات ما يدل على خبرة سياسية عويصة، وكان من نصيب المنطقة أن توجه هذه اللهجة الشرسة بينما كانت القوى الإسلامية الأخرى منشغلة في صراعات أخرى وشهدت المنطقة بعد ذلك حركات نضال ناصعة الجبين، ومما يزيد من أهمية هذا الكتاب أن الباحثين العرب لا يكادون يجدون مصادر أصلية في هذا الموضوع فالمصادر المحلية نادرة، ويأتي ترجمة هذا السجل الكامل لأعمال أفرنسو ولبوكيرك لتسد هذه الثغرة في المكتبة العربية في المجال التاريخي لهذه الأحداث.
