يدور موضوع الكتاب حول الدور السياسي والحضاري لمصر في عهد الفراعنة، والموقع الجغرافي الذي كان، مشاركاً ومؤثراً في صنع الأحداث التاريخية التي عرفها العالم القديم، وعلى أساسه نسجت مصر شبكة واسعة من العلاقات مع الدول والشعوب التي تواجدت في تلك المرحلة، خصوصاً في منطقة الشرق الأدنى القديم الذي امتد من بلاد ما بين النهرين وآسيا الصغرى إلى مصر، على الرقعة الجغرافية الجنوبية الغربية للقارة الآسيوية.
بناءً على ذلك وجهت المؤلفة اهتمامها نحو هدفين رئيسيين في هذا الكتاب: الأول تمثل في دراسة الأوضاع والأحداث الداخلية التي تعاقبت على مصر إنطلاقاً من التجمعات البشرية الأولى التي انتشرت على ضفتي وادي النيل، إلى نهاية مرحلة التاريخ القديم الذي ترافق مع احتلال الإسكندر المقدوني لمصر. أما الهدف الثاني فقد تمصل في إبراز علاقات مصر الخارجية وما رافقها من إنعكاسات على مصر وعلى منطقة الشرق الأدني القديم برمته.
جاء الكتاب في سبعة ابواب تناولت المراحل الآتية:
الباب الأول "مدخل إلى دراسة تاريخ مصر القديم" ، الباب الثاني: "مصر في مرحلة ما قبل التاريخ" ، الباب الثالث: "مصر في مرحلة التاريخ الفرعوني القديم" ، الباب الرابع: "مصر في مرحلة التاريخ الفرعوني – الأوسط" ، الباب الخامس: "مصر في مرحلة التاريخ الفرعوني – الحديث" ، الباب السادس: "مصر في ظل الإحتلالات الأجنبية" ، الباب السابع والأخير: "علاقات مصر الخارجية – السياسية – والتجارية".
