عرف الوطن العربي حركة قومية عربية منذ القرن التاسع عشر، كانت أهدافها مركزة أولاً على توطيد وجود أمة عربية، وثانياً على وجوب أن تتحد هذه الأمة سياسياً في دولة-أمة واحدة. مع ذلك، وفي حين أن كثيراً من الحركات القومية حققت هدفها فأفاقت دولة-أمة، فإن الوطن العربي ككل مصدر إحباط للقوميين العرب. وتبين المناقشة والتحليل أن الفكر العربي-وإن كانت القومية العربية قد فقدت هيمنتها على السياسات العربية-فقد أنتج مساهمة جديدة في أفكار القومية العربية والوحدة العربية.
