تفترض التوراة وجوداً تاريخياً عريقاً في القدم لشعب إسرائيل في فلسطين، رغم عدم إستطاعة القبائل الإسرائيلية دخول الأرض الكنعانية قبل القرن الثاني عشر قبل الميلاد، ويتجلى هذا الإفتاض من خلال السرد التوراتي لقصص الآباء الأوائل لبني إسرائيل في سفر التكوين، وإستبعاد المصريين لبني إسرائيل في أرض مصر، ثم خروجهم منها على يد محررهم وقائدهم موسى، كما يرد في بقية أسفار التوراة.
والمشكلة التي تطالعنا في فهم الحوادث التاريخية الواردة في التوراة، هي أن كاتبيها لا يتمتعون بالحس الزمني لترتيب الأحداث، فجاءت متداخلة فيما بينها، متضاربة ومتعارضة في آن واحد، فكثير من العادات والتقاليد التي كانت سائدة في زمن ما تنقل بجرة قلم إلى زمن تسود فيه علاقات أخرى، لاتمت بأية صلة إلى تلك.
