هذا المعجم هو المخطوطة الوحيدة التي بقيت من هذا الكتاب النفيس "ما اتفق لفظه واختلف معناه" لابن الشجري المتوفى سنة 542هـ/1148م وهي من المخطوطات النادرة المحفوظة في مكتبة مدينة برلين بألمانيا الغربية ورقمها MS.OR.Fo1.3142. ومؤلف الكتاب هو هبة الدين بن علي بن محمد... بن علي بن أبي طالب أبو السعادات المعروف بابن الشجري وهو ينحدر من نسل الحسن بن علي بن أبي طالب وليس من ولد الحسين كما ظنّ صاحب شذرات الذهب وصاحب مرآة الجنان.
ولد ابن الشجري ببغداد سنة 450هـ وتوفي سنة 542هـ. وقد كان أوحد لا يكاد يتكلم في مجلسه بكلمة إلا وتتضمن أدب نفس أو أدب درس. وقد كان أوحد زمانه وفرد أوانه في علم العربية ومعرفة اللغة وأشعار العرب وأيامها وأحوالها متضلعاً في الأدب. قال عنه ياقوت الحموي في معجم الأدباء أنه صنف "الأمالي" وهو أكبر تصانيفه وأمتعها. أملاه في أربعة وثمانين مجلساً، و"الانتصار" على ابن الخشاب ردّ فيه عليه ما انتقده من كتاب الأمالي. وكتاب "الحماسة" ضاهى به حماسة أبي تمام. و"شرح التصريف الملوكي". و"شرح اللمع لابن جني النحوي" وكتاب "ما اتفق لفظه واختلف معناه" الذي نقلب صفحاته. وقد جمع ابن الشجري في هذا الكتاب من الكِلَمِ العربية ما وجده مبدداً في الكتب اللغوية مما اتفق لفظاً واختلف معنىً، مضيفاً إليه ذكر الشواهد عليه من الكتاب العزيز والشعر القديم وكلام الرسول عليه السلام وصحابته رضي الله عنهم. وجعله أبواباً كل باب منها في ضمن حرف من الحروف المعجمة ليناول الكلمة طالبها من بابها. ولمعجم ابن الشجري هذا أهمية فقد أورد فيه ألفاظاً جديدة غير مذكورة في المصادر الأخرى، ومعاني جديدة لألفاظ معروفة لم يذكرها أهل اللغة وهكذا يكون هذا المعجم استكمالاً لما بين أيدينا من معاجم.
