تعتبر لعبة "كرة القدم-الفوتبول" أفضل وأوسع رياضة شعبية في العالم، وقد بدأ انتشارها بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، ومنذ ذلك الوقت أصبحت هذه اللعبة ظاهرة اجتماعية، كما أصبح أبطالها من ألمع نجوم المجتمع وأكثر شهرة ودخلاً، ويقال أن منشأ هذه اللعبة هي بلاد الصين، إذ أنه ثمة رياضة تشبه كرة القدم تحمل اسم: "تسو-تشو tsu-chu)، في القرنين الرابع والثالث قبل المسيح.
وكانت أول الإشارات الواضحة لممارسة هذه اللعبة في إنكلترا على أثر موت حارس مرمى مفاجئ في إسكس بتاريخ 23 شباط 1583 واليوم هناك أكثر من 130 دولة أعضاء في الاتحاد العالمي لفرق كرة القدم وتجري في معظم المدن الأوروبية مراهنات أسبوعية لنتائج مباريات فرق كرة القدم باسم (toto) تذهب إيراداتها الضخمة لصالح المراهنين الفائزين والمؤسسات الرياضية.
وما يرمي إليه هذا الكتاب هو إلقاء الضوء على فن هذه اللعبة، حيث يشرح أسسها وتمارينها التقنية ووظائف لاعبيها المبتدئين، ويقدم رسوماً توضيحية وأخرى بيانية تساعد القارئ على فهم ما تم شرحه من مواد نظرية.
