إن السنة النبوية المطهرة لها مكانة عظيمة؛ فهي شارحة ومبينة لما أجمل في القرآن الكريم، فكان من الواجب الحفاظ عليها، من هذا المنطق قام العلماء بتدوين السنة في المسانيد والمعاجم والصحاح والسنن والجوامع، وألفوا في رجال أسانيدها الكتب العديدة، كتب الثقات من الرواة، وكتب الضعفاء وغير ذلك. والملاحظ بأن للعلماء عناية خاصة بالصحيحين، إذ أنهما أصحّ الكتب بعد كتاب الله بشهادة العلماء والفقهاء والمحدثين، وغيرهم ممن اعتنوا بهذا الدين. فقد قام البعض بتصنيف المستخرجات على الصحيحين، ومنها المستخرج لأبي نعيم الأصبهاني المتوفى سنة 430، ومنها المستخرجات على مسلم فقط كمستخرج أبي عوانه المتوفى سنة 316هـ. ومنها الشروح على البخاري كفتح الباري للحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني المتوفى سنة 852هـ. ومنها شروح على مسلم كالمنهاج في شرح صحيح مسلم للنووي المتوفى سنة 676هـ. ومنها في الرجال الرواة، ككتاب الجمع بين رجال الصحيحين للقيسراني المتوفى سنة 507هـ، وكتاب "ذكر أسماء التابعين ومن بعدهم" الذي نقلب صفحاته. وهو كتاب يذكر فيه الحافظ أبي الحسن علي بن عمر أحمد الدراقطني أسماء التابعين ومن بعدهم من الرواة الذين صحت روايتهم عن الثقات عند البخاري ومسلم.
ونظراً لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد تمّ الاعتناء به حيث تمّ إغناؤه بمقدمة تضمنت دراسة لحياة المصنف الحافظ الدراقطني، ولكتابه هذا. وجاء ذلك في ثلاثة فصول: 1-حياته ومكانته العلمية، وأهم مؤلفاته. 2-ما أُلِّف في هذا العلم. 3-وصف المنهج الذي اتبع في تحقيق هذا الكتاب. واختتمت تلك الدراسة بوصف النسخة الخطية.
