تتواجد القوى الكهرطيسية بين الشحنات والتيارات الكهربائية.
يمكن تحديد وحساب الحقل الكهرطيسي لأن نقطة في الفضاء (القوة التي يمكن تحسسها بشحنة أو تيار في هذه النقطة).
تمثل قيمة الحقل الكهربائي E القوة بين الشحنات، يمثل الحقل المغناطيسي H القوة بين التيارات.
كما تستطيع موجة ضغط الهواء لإنتقال من مكان لآخر - مثلما تنتقل الأصوات - فإن الحقل الكهرطيسي يستطيع التنقل كموجة كهرطيسية تدعى عادة بالإشعاع الكهرطيسي.
ومن الأمثلة على الأمواج الكهرطيسية: الضوء الأشعة السينية X- Ray، الأمواج المايكروية وامواج الراديو.
تتمتع الأمواج الكهرطيسية بميزة فائقة الأهمية وهي أنها لا تحتاج إلى ناقل!... أي أنها لا تتطلب وجود الهواء أو الفضاء لحملها كما هو الحال في الأمواج الصوتية.
