لقد كان سبب تأليف هذه الرسالة أن المسلمين بحاجة ماسة الى تذكيرهم أصول عقيدتهم كما فهمها السلف الصالح, بعدما تكاثر أهل البدع وكثرت شبهاتهم, وتأثر بها بعض الفضلاء. ومن هذه الأصول الهامة التي اضطرب فهمها لدى بعض الدعاة: مسألة حجية خبر الآحاد في العقيدة, حيث تأثر البعض بشبهات المتكلمين ودعواهم حين فرقوا بين العقائد والأحكام, أو الأصول والفروع, وادعوا أن الآحاد لا يحتج به في الأصول, وممن تأثر بذلك بعض كبار الدعاة, ممن عرف عنهم الدفاع عن السنة. وهكذا نجد نصوص العلماء متكلمين وأصوليين مجتمعة على أن خبر الآحاد لا يفيد اليقين, فلا تثبت به العقيدة, ونجد المحققين يصفون ذلك بأنه ضروري لا يصح أن ينازع أحد في شيء منه. ومن هنا يتأكد أن أحاديث الآحاد لا تفيد عقيدة, ولا يصح الاعتماد عليها في شأن المغيبات قول مجمع عليه وثابت بحكم الضرورة العقلية التي لا مجال للخلاف فيها عند العقلاء.
