"وكان على زانة أن تترك كل شيء: هي مناوس المجاور للمرفأ، الشارع المنخفض المظلل بأشجار المنفا المعمّرة، والمكان الذي كان بالنسبة إليها أساسياً كبيبلوس طفولتها: البلدة الصغيرة في لبنان؛ لقد تذكرتها بصوت عال وهي تجول بين غرف البيت المليئة بالغبار إلى أن اختفت في بستان الغناء، حيث كانت أغصان شجرة المطاط تظلل البستان والنخلات المزروعة منذ نصف قرن أو أكثر. وقرب الشرفة، كان عبير السوسن الأبيض يختلط برائحة ابنها الأصغر، فتجلس على الأرض تصلي وحدها وتبكي راجية رجوع عمر. قبل هجرها للبيت، رأت زانة طيفي أبيها زوجها في كوابيس الليالي الأخيرة، شعرت بوجودهما في غرفة النوم. كنت أسمعها تردد أثناء النهار كلمات الكابوس: "إنهما يمشيان هنا، أبي وحليم جاءا لزيارتي إنهما موجودان في هذا البيت".. لم أرها تموت.. ولكن قبل موتها ببضعة أيام، وهي مضطجعة على فراش المستشفى، علمت بأنها رفعت رأسها وسألت بالعربية: "هل تصالح ابناي"؟. ردد هذا السؤال بشجاعة لا تجيدها إلا أم قلقة ساعة يدهمها الموت. لم يجبها أحد، فتلاشى وجهها الذي كان لا يعرف التجاعيد، ولكنها، تمكنت من أن تدير وجهها باحثة عن النافذة الصغيرة الوحيدة في الحائط الرمادي، حيث انمحت قطعة من سماء المغيب".
رواية تزدحم فيها المعاني الإنسانية، وتصّاعد من طيات أحداثها نفحات عطر ذاك الشرق، ذاك الوطني الذي يسكن في تلابيب روح كاتبها.
