تبلغ المادة الأساسية لهذا المعجم خمسة وعشرين ألف كلمة، ترجع في معظمها إلى مظانها الأصلية، مجموعة من شتى الأقطار العربية. فلقد قمنا، على مدى فترة تتجاوز عشر سنوات، بجمع مختلف الجرائد والمجلات، والكتب والمسلسلات، في العلوم الإنسانية والطبيعية والتقنية، فضلاً عن بعض المختارات الأدبية، ثم نخلنا المادة اللغوية نخلاً، معنى ومبنى، مستأنسين في ذلك بأمهات المعاجم العربية، والقواميس الموضوعة في اللغة العربية ولغة أجنبية والعكس، ثم قمنا بامتحان ما نخلنا، وأضفنا وأكملنا ما رأينا أنه الصواب.
لقد راعينا أن تُعين مادة هذا المعجم - بما في ذلك الإشارات والإيضاحات النحوية والدلالية والصرفية - المسترشدين به ممن يتكلمون العربية والألمانية، على القيام بترجمة مختلف ما يتعلق بالحياة العامة من مؤلفات على تفاوتها صعوبة وأسلوباً، مع علمنا بتعدد الناحية الوظيفية للأسلوب. يعين هذا المعجم كذلك على ترجمة النصوص العلمية والتقنية الميسرة، على أنه لم يغب عن الذهن أن المصطلحات - التي يسعى إلى الاتفاق عليها علماء العربية سعياً حثيثاً - ليست بعد متيسرة دائماً وفي كل حال. أما الجديد المستحدث والمشتق - بما في ذلك الاستعمالات والمفردات التي أقرها المجمعيون - فقد ارتضيناها بطبيعة الحال، إذا ما أثبتناها في نصوص عربية أصيلة - أي غير مترجمة - وإذا أجازها المتخصصون في المجالات المستخدمة فيها، وهكذا فإن بعض هذه المفردات يخضع هنا لأول مرة للمسح المعجمي، وينسحب ذلك - فيما ينسحب - على بعض أسماء الأعلام والمختصرات.
لقد حاولنا جهدنا أن نُثبت الألفاظ التي تستخدم فعلاً، أو التي يشيع استخدامها ولو اقتضى الأمر إثبات الخطأ الشائع، كما في حواديث - جمعاً لأحدوثة - إلى جانب أحاديث.
ولقد شفعنا اللفظ العربي ونظيره الألماني بالإيضاحات الوافرة، التي تيسر للمسترشد بالمعجم الوقوع على اللفظ المراد وكيفية استخدامه، فإذا نظرنا إلى اللفظ العربي وجدنا هذه الإيضاحات تشير إلى الحالات الصرفية وإلى العوامل، وإلى بيان منزلة الأسلوب من الفصاحة، وإلى القطر الذي يشيع فيه اللفظ - إذا لزم ذلك - وإلى قرائن السياق التي تشكل مع اللفظ الأساسي تعابير لغوية بعينها، أو إلى إمكانات نظم ذلك اللفظ.
