"حلية الأولياء وطبقات الأصفياء" كتاب في الزهاد والعباد والصالحين، يتضمن أسماء جماعة من أعلام المحققين من المتصرفة وبعض أحاديثهم وكلامهم وأئمتهم وترتيب طبقاتهم من النساك ومحجتهم من قرن الصحابة والتابعين ومن بعدهم ممن عرف الأدلة والحقائق، وباشر الأحوال، وساكن الرياض والحدائق، وفارق العوارض والعلائق. والمصنف لم يلتزم بمنهج محدد في تأليفه للكتاب، ولكن هناك ملامح رئيسية تتضح من خلال الإطلاع على الكتاب، فبدأ كتابه بالعشرة المبشرين بالجنة، ثم أورد زهاد الصحابة، ثم أهل الصفة، ثم التابعين وتابعيهم، ثم من يليهم إلى عصره.
ومن ذلك ينضح أن المؤلف قد راعى الترتيب في الفصل إلى جانب الزمن، وبحكم أنه حافظ ومحدث فإن مؤلفاته تأتي كلها عبارة عن مرويات بالسند المتصل سواء كانت أخباراً أو أحاديث وخلافه، ولعل هذا الكتاب هو أوسع كتاب في ذكر أمساء النساك والعباد في المكتبة العربية، وقد ذكر المؤلف أكبر عدد منهم من عصر الصحابة حتى عصر تأليفه، وهو إلى جانب ذلك هو من أغنى الكتب بالحكم المختارة النافعة، والكلمات المؤثرة الرائعة وأقوال العلماء، وأرباب القلوب، بالإضافة إلى مجموعة كبيرة من المقتطفات من الشعر الإلهي.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اهتم "أبو هاجر السعيد بن بسيوني زغلول" بإعداد هذا الفهرس للحلية" مضمناً إياها كل ما يحتاجه الباحث والطالب من مواد في الكتاب النص فاعتنى أولاً بإدراج فهارس للأحاديث النبوية، ثم صنع فهارس للآثار وللإعلام وأخيراً ساق فهارس للبقاع والأشعار.
