لقد شكل الشعر للعرب خزانة أساسية لثقافتهم الجمعية ومصدراً غنياً لرصد تفاعلاتهم مع الحياة، فالشعر ديوان العرب، إليه كانوا وما زالوا يرجعون، لا في تاريخهم ونظم أفكارهم مشاعرهم وأوضاع عيشهم فحسب، بل حتى في ضبط لغتهم وحفظ قيمهم، فهو مرآة وجودهم الأصفى، وأساس قيم لرصد حركية حياتهم ونظمهم العقلية.
وللمختارات الشعرية أهمية بالغة في تراثنا العربي، لذلك راح العلماء والرواة يجوبون الصحارى بحثاً عن الشعر. ولم تقتصر العملية على جمع الشعر فحسب، بل تخطتها إلى اللغة وغيرها من العلوم، وحرص الرواة على جمع أقصى ما يمكن جمعه، ثم قاموا بالغربلة، وتخصص بعضهم بجمع أشعار قبيلة معينة، أو شعراء معينين، أو شعراء مدينة معينة، أو جمع شعر مختص بموضوع معين. كشعر الحماسة، وشعر الهجاء، وشعر المديح، وشعر الحب والغزل، والمراثي وغيرها.
والمجموعة التي بين يدينا من المختارات تأتي في إطار قصائد الحب والغزل، وهي منتقاة من بطون كتب التراث العربي ودواوين الشعر قديماً وحديثاً، ولا يمكن الادعاء أن ما تم تقديمه في هذا الكتاب هو أجمل ما قاله الشعراء العرب في العشق والحب والغزل ولكن يمكن القول أن ما تم إثباته فيه هو من أجمل الأقوال والقصائد.
