هذا الكتاب يجمع مختارات من النقد الشعري العربي بغية تقديم صورة مجمعة عن النقد العربي القديم حيث يعرض لنماذج من النقد لدى قدامة بن جعفر، وابن طباطبا، والجرجاني، والآمدي، والمبرد، والقلقشندي. وسبب الاقتصار على هؤلاء راجع لأن آرائهم تمثل بشكل جوهري نظرية الشعر عند العرب. إضافة إلى الرغبة في تيسير الوصول إلى المراجع الأم في هذه الناحية حيث إن الإطلاع على كل ما هو مدون في هذا الحقل يعد ضرباً من ضروب المستحيل.
والكتاب يتعامل مع المادة المختارة من منطلق النص وطبيعته وليس من منطلق الوصف التاريخي، الترجمي.
ما تطمح إليه هذه المختارات هو تقديم صورة مجتمعة من النقد العربي القديم، تسهيلاً للإطلاع، ونظراً لهذه الثقافة في أي لغة أتت. فإن تحقق شيء مما صبونا -ونصبو إليه- فتتأكد الدوائر الرمزية التي تتداخل فيها الثقافات، أو تتداخل فيها الثقافة الواحدة، وإن لم يتأكد الهدف فنكتفي بشرف المحاولة وأصالة العلاقة مع الموروث كمرجعية لا منظورة لسيرورة النص الأدبي.
