يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى توضيح دور الخليج (إقليمي البحرين وعمان) في الحياة السياسية والاقتصادية بين القرنين الخامس والسابع الهجريين، ودور الإمارات العربية الناشئة في تلك الفترة. كما أنه يهدف إلى إلقاء الضوء على دور المغول والقوى الفارسية في الحياة السياسية، بالإضافة إلى توضيح الدور الاقتصادي الذي لعبه إقليماً البحرين وعمان في هذه الفترة ولا سيما في المجال التجاري.
تضمن الفصل الأول الأوضاع السياسية في إقليمي البحرين وعمان ولا سيما ظهور الإمامة الإباضية الثالثة واضطلاعها بمهمة الحفاظ على هوية أهل المنطقة ودورها البارز في النواحي السياسية. وما حدث من انتشار النفوذ السلجوقي ثم الفاطمي في هذه المنطقة. وكيف عمل الفاطميون على نشر المذهب الإسماعيلي بين أهالي منطقة البحرين وعمان. و على أثر الحروب الصليبية على هذه المنطقة وعلاقة مغول فارس بإقليمي عمان والبحرين. وكذلك محاولة المماليك مد نفوذهم إلى هذه المنطقة وسياستهم في المنطقة.
كما تحدث الفصل الثاني عن الإمارات العربية التي ظهرت في إقليمي البحرين وعمان نتيجة تدهور أوضاع الإمامة الإباضية الثالثة ولعبت دوراً كبيراً في تشكيل الحياة السياسية في هذه الفترة.
وتناول الفصلين الثالث والرابع الحديث عن النظم المالي وأهم الموارد المالية وفي مقدمتها ما كان يجنيه أهل المنطقة وحكامها من التجارة وغيرها من النشاطات الاقتصادية.
وتحدث الفصل الخامس والأخير عن النشاط التجاري في إقليمي البحرين وعمان حيث تعرض لطرق التجارة الدولية ومحطاتها، وعن الأسواق التجارية الداخلية والخارجية وتجارة المرور التي ميزت هذه المنطقة في الماضي والحاضر.
