"لست خائفاً من الخطر، دخل رجل، قتلته دون أدنى ارتعاش، أني لا أخاف الآتي، ولا أعتقد بالغيبيات، لا أخاف الموتى، أؤمن بالعدم الذي سينتهي إليه كل كائن يختفي. ولكن... نهم، ولكن!... أخاف من نفسي!..."
كل هذا الرقص الذي يمر أمام المرايا، هذه اللقاءات المتضاربة المهلوسة مع القرين، هذه الكراهية المرضية للصور والرسوم، هذا الهروب الدائم، وهذا المزاج المضطرب، والتمزق العنيف في القلب الحساس، كل هذا يعني الموت، الخوف من الموت، فقدان الأمل، كل هذا يعني الفناء. إن خط سير هذه القصص والحكايا: الإحباط للكائن البشري. ذوبان الشخصيات تعبها، شفافيتها. إن مأساة بطل "على ظهر حصان" في "الآنسة فيفي" تختفي، تمتص بواسطة المجهول إنهم على المسرح دمى متحركة، نسخر منهم؟ إنهم غالباً ما يعبرون عن موباسان الواقع في مأزق!.
في هذا العمل سنقرأ تفاصيل الحياة الاجتماعية للعصر الذي كتب فيه موباسان، وأحداث هذا العصر، وعادات المجتمع العائد لأواخر القرن التاسع عشر. ونجد فيه أيضاً حركة الطبقات الاجتماعية التي كانت تمثل أدوارها على مسرح التاريخ. عندما يستقدم الألمان، في "الآنسة فيفي" فتيات من مدينة "روان" فإنهم كلهن يحملن أسماء الحرب بحرف "أ"، "a"! باميلا، آمندا، إيفا... هذا ما يتوافق مع عبارات البيوت السرية. كما أنه مما يتوافق مع طقوس "بيوت فيليبر وشعائره (عنوان رواية مهمة لجان لوران) أن يكون بين المومسات "راشيل" اليهودية الجميلة. الوصف رائع لا تبدو منه أية شقوق أو تصدع، وهو أمر طبيعي لذلك البصري الذي تتلمذ على فلوبير.
