إنَّ صوتَ الضادِ كانَ موضعَ إهتمام علماء اللغة العربية وعلماء القراءة القرآنية والتجويد، منذ بدء عصر تدوين هذه العلوم، نظراً لصعوبة النطق به، لإنفراده بمخرجه وتميزه بصفاته، وكان أقرب الأصوات إليه صوت الظاء، فربما مالت ألسنةُ بعض الناطقين به إليه، ونَبَّةَ العلماء إلى ذلك وحذَّروا منه، لكن مشكلة النطق بالضاد كانت تزداد صعوبة بتقدم السنين، ومن ثم فإن عدداً من العلماء ألَّفوا رسائل وكتباً في الضاد والظاء، لبيان ما بينهما من فرق صوتي، ولتمييز الألفاظ التي تكتب بالضاد عن التي تكتب بالظاء.
وكانت لأبي عمرو الداني مشاركة في معالجة مشكلة الضاد في ما كَتَبَ من كُتُب في علوم القرآن الكريم، وأفرد أكثر من رسالة أو كتاب لموضوع الضاد والظاء، من بينها كتاب (الفرق بين الضاد والظاء في كتاب الله عزَّ وجلّ، وفي المشهور من كلام الناس) وهو أكبرها، تناول فيه الفرق الصوتي بينهما، وذكر الكلمات التي فيها حرف الظاء، وتَتبَّعَها في القرآن الكريم، والمشهور منها في كلام العرب، وأشار إلى أن ما عدا ما ذكره فإنه بالضاد.
