إنّ العلوم اللسانية قد عرفت منذ بداية القرن العشرين وطواله جملة من المدارس والاتجاهات اللسانية متعاقبة ومتداخلة وأحياناً متناقضة، ما جعل هذا العلم يتطور ويشهد منعرجات حاسمة، ويبدو أنّ كلّ دارس قد جلب معه عدة لسانية غربية وحاول بها أن يهوي على التراث، فيعيد تأليفه وفق النظرية التي درسها وتشبع بها هذا الدارس أو ذاك، فمن بنيوية دي سوسير إلى سلوكية بلومفيلد وغلوسيماتيك هيالمسلاف، ووظائفية مارتينيه وتحويلية هاريس، وتوليدية تشومسكي، وغيرهم كثير. في هذه الفصول ركزنا على مبحث الدلالة وما يلفـّها من إشكاليات تتعلق باللغة والمعرفة والمعنى والتأويل. ويجد القارئ نصوصاً مترجمة عن هذه القضايا رأينا أن نـُثبتها لتعينه على تدقيق النظر في بعض المسائل الفكرية والمنهجية التي تتصل بمقاربات اللغة في النظريات الحديثة، ويعثر المتصفح لهذا الكتاب أيضاً على مقدمات وأشتات لمداخل بحثية في تعدد المعنى، ومن رصد لسبل نشوئه وتعليل طرائق انتشاره ومحاولة ضبطه ضبطاً لسانياً يتساوق ومحاولات علم الدلالة الحاسوبيّ الذي ذهب شوطاً في معالجة اللغة الطبيعية معالجة آلية.
