لا يزال موضوع الهوية من أكثر الموضوعات إثارة للجدل في واقعنا العربي المعاصر وفي هذا الكتاب ينبري عشرة من المفكرين العرب المعاصرين للحديث حول الهوية العربية في فبينما اعتبر "محمد أركون" للحديث عن نموذج سنغافورة بوصفه تجربة سياسية ومجتمعاً مدنياً متعدداً الإثنيات، والثقافات، واللغات، ومقارنته بالمجتمع العربي نجد أن "علي حرب" عن موقف العلماء والفقهاء الذين كانوا في الماضي يشكلون سلطة معرفية مستقلة عن سلطة الخلفاء والأمراء، سلطة مشروعة لها الحق أن تراقب وتخالف وتنصح على عكس المثقف الحالي الذي يبدو اليوم لصيقاً بأهل الحكم هو "يبصم ويختم ويبارك دونما رؤية أو تفكير. ولهذا لا يشكل المثقفون، قادة الفكر، قيادة فكرية حقيقية ولا يمثلون سلطة معرفية لها مشروعيتها وفاعليتها...". أما "برهان غليون" فتحدث عن أزمة الهوية التي "... هي التعبير عن ضرورة مراجعة الذاتية وإعادة تقييم الذات وقدراتها وإمكاناتها وأهدافها، وتحديد ما إذا كانت تحتاج كي تستمر كفاعل تاريخي إلى الحفاظ على نفس الأهداف والإستراتيجيات أم أنها تحتاج إلى تبديلها وتغييرها..." وأما "حازم صاغية" وبعيداً عن السيناريو العربي المتداول اعتبر "أن" الهوية "لم يعد لها وطن ومستقر إلا بين الجماعات البدائية الأولى التي لم تتعرض بتاتاً للخارج، والتي يصح الشك في وجود أي منها اليوم. أما الذات الجوهرية، التي لا يسري التغيير عليها ولا يجوز الإنقسام فيها، فخرافة أخرى لا تمكن نسبتها حتى إلى تخيلات الأطفال وعبثهم. وأما الآخر فاستدخلناه فينا واستدخلنا فيه، لا اقتصاداً وثقافة وسياسة واستراتيجية فحسب، بل أيضاً في المسكن والمأكل والمشرب... والسلوك...".
