تأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة من كونها هي الأولى التي تحيط بالجوانب المختلفة لهذا الموضوع، وتبرز القيم والمزايا العديدة التي تتسم بها أدب الرثاء في بلاد الرافدين، شأنه شأن سائر الآداب والفنون والثقافة التي خلفتها الحضارات التي تعاقبت على تلك البلاد؛ سواء من ناحية العادات التي كانت تعبر بها الناس عن آلامها وحزنها ومشاعرها تجاه الحوادث التي تلم بوطنها (مدينتها) جراء الغزوات الخارجية، أو من جهة طقوس رثاء الآلهة والمعابد التي تتعرض إما للموت المؤقت (الآلهة) أو تلك التي ترافق هدم المعابد وإعادة بناءها من جديد.
إنه نوع من كتابة التاريخ بأسلوب أدبي مؤثر يجمع بين المعلومة كقيمة تاريخية وإجتماعية، وأهمية تلك المراثي الأدبية والفنية والدينية كشكل من الأشكال الأدبية التعبيرية التي سادت في العصور القديمة.
