ترقى أصول اللغة الآرامية السريانية إلى القرن السابع قبل الميلاد، وكان من تطوّرها على كرّ القرون أنها اللغة الأدبية الفريدة في الشرق في العهود الأولى للمسيحية، وتوالت فيها الأجيال، وإذا بها تتضاءل، بعد عصورها الذهبية، وتنحسر في الحقل الديني، ثم تعود وتزدهر مجدداً، ثم تخبت، وما زالت في مدّ وجزر حتى أدخلها اللغويون المحدثون في مصافّ اللغات الميتة.
ورغبت الجامعة اللبنانية في بعث التراث السرياني، فنشرت للمؤلفيّن سلسلة أبحاث دروس لغوية وأدبية، كان أولها كتاب "الأصول والقراءة"، ظهر سنة 1964.
ومرَّ عقد من الزمن على صدور هذا الجزء الأول، لذلك رأينا أن نعيد طبع هذا الكتاب، بعد تنقيح النصّ، وإضافة الفهارس، والإلحاق بجدول للألفاظ التي وردت فيه، فكانت هذه الطبعة الثانية.
