في مطلع عصر النهضة - وتحديداً في عام 1384 للميلاد، قام 13 رجلاً من نبلاء توسكانا برحلة حجّ إلى مصر وفلسطين والشام، في أوائل أيام دولة المماليك البرجيّة التي كان على رأسها آنذاك السّلطان الظاهر برقوق.
من بين هؤلاء الرحّالة قام ثلاثة من مدينة فلورنسا بتدوين وقائع رحلتهم وما جرى لهم فيها من وقائع، وما رأوه من عظمة مدن الشرق إبّان إزدهار المماليك، بعد 97 عاماً من طرد الغزاة الصليبيين، وهم: ليوناردو فريسكوبالدي، وسيمونه سيغولي، وجورجو غوتشي.
نتابع في هذا الكتاب الطريف (وهو الثاني) تتمة الأحداث الحيّة والوصف الشائق لمدن الشرق التي زارها النبلاء الإيطاليون، فعدَّدوا فيها اماكن الحج والزيارة بفلسطين، ووصفوا طرق السفر والمدن والقرى والمعالم الطبيعية، وخصّوا التجارة بجانب واف من كتاباتهم، وأدهشهم الغنى التجاري والتقدّم الحضاري للمشرق.
