يعتبر الشاعر العراقي "بدر شاكر السياب" أحد أهم الشعراء الذين شكلوا تجربة الشعر العربي الحديث، وأحد أوائل المبدعين الذين مارسوا التجديد والتجريب في القصيدة العربية الحديثة؛ وقد شكل توظيف الأسطورة مركزاً هاماً في شعره، فأغرت هذه التجربة عدداً كبيراً من الدارسين العرب بقراءتها من زوايا متعددة تتقاطع أحياناً وتتشابك أحياناً أخرى.
يعنى هذا الكتاب بدراسة الكيفية التي تمت فيها دراسة هذا الشاعر، مركزاً على الدراسات التي تناولت الأسطورة، لملاحظة آليات التلقي ووسائله، وما ارتبط به من وسائل منهجية وفكرية، وذلك من خلال توظيف عدد من آليات نظرية التلقي ومفاهيمها.
إن حصر مادة القراءة لا يعني سهولة حصر آلياتها، فقد تعددت الآليات بقدر تعدد الدارسين وإختلاف المواقع التي انطلق منها كل واحد منهم، لكن الأسئلة الأساسية التي ظلت مطروحة بقوة هي: هل درس شعر السياب فعلاً؟ وهل أدى إختلاف الآليات والرؤى إلى إختلاف النتائج؟ وهل كانت معظم النتائج التي توصل الدارسون إليها مرتبطة بطبيعة النص السيابي أو هو أمر يرجع إلى طبيعة النص السيابي؟.
بالتأكيد لا يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى وضع النقد العربي في سلة واحدة لكن الكم الكبير من الدراسات التي وقع عليها يعطي مشروعية للأسئلة السابقة، ويعطي هذا الكتاب فرصة لمحاولة طرحها والإجابة عنها.
