"في ظلال شجرة التين البري" يسمر الكاتب الهندي "ر.ك.نارايان" قراءة ويفتنهم بنسيج كلماته بحيث يبقيهم مبهورين مسحورين بإيقاع قصصه وبالشخصيات التي تسكتها، وبهذه الحكايات التي يلتقطها من السوق وسفح الجبل والشوارع المغبرة وشواطئ الأنهار، يصور لنا حياة القرية والمدينة بأسلوب تهكمي ساحر يجسد فن كتابة القصة بأبدع مظاهره كما يقول الناقد الأميركي "بول جراي".
الخلفية الأساسية التي تؤطر هذه القصص جميعاً هي "مالجودي" التي لا يتغير فيها الكثير رغم مرور الزمن. فالإنجليز الذين قلما يرد ذكرهم في هذا الكتاب أتوا وذهبوا. أما الحرب العالمية الثانية فلا يرد ذكرها إلا بتأثيرها المؤقت على أسعار الرز.
وأعمال الشغب التي تندلع بين المسلمين والهندوس بعد حصول الهند على استقلالها نواها من خلال عيني بطل قصة غريب عصي على الصيف، محايد في موقفه: "كانت على وجه الإجمال حياة سعيدة آمنة، حتى شهر أكتوبر 1974 حين بين له فجأة بأن الناس حوله بدأوا يتحدثون ويتصرفون وكأنهم الوحوش".
الحياة في قصص نارايان هذه تتشكل بصورة عامة من أناس يمارسون نمط الحياة التي كان يمارسها أجدادهم منذ مئات السنين. فهم يجاهدون لاستعطاف الآلهة ونيل رضاها. وفي قصة "تيتيا" يذكر زوجان أنهما نذرا أن يقصا شعر طفلهما في معبد قديم حين كان في الثانية من عمره، إذا نجا وتعافى من السعال الديكي وتشنجات الصرع.
