يضم الكتاب أوراق أعمال المؤتمر الذي عقد حول "الأقليات والقوميات في السلطنة العثمانية بعد 1516" للمساهمة في توضيح مسألة ظروف وشروط حياة وتطور هذه الأقليات والقوميات منذ حلول مرحلة اكتمال رقعة السلطنة الجغرافية ومن ضمنها التوسع في منطقتنا طبعاً.
انعقد هذا المؤتمر في الفرع الثاني من كلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية في الجامعة اللبنانية، وحاضر فيه أربعة وعشرون أستاذاً جامعياً وباحثاً. ولقد انتمى المحاضرون إلى جنسيات عديدة معظمها من شعوب السلطنة العثمانية ومن هذه "الأقليات والقوميات"، بالذات.
توزعت أعمال المؤتمر على عدد من الأبواب نوقشت فيها مواضيع محورية، فكانت المقاربة النظرية لموضوعي الأقليات والقوميات كمنطلق، ثم دارت الأبحاث والمناقشات حول: مسألتي الحماية والإصلاح في السلطنة العثمانية، والأقليات في أنحاء السلطنة، وقضايا بلقانية، وظاهرات قومية عربية؛ وحالات لبنانية.
